This week Aaron had a business trip in Washington DC for a few days so Atticus and I hopped in the car with him and headed north. My long time friend and college roommate Amy lives in Richmond, VA so it worked out perfectly for Aaron to drop us off at her house on his way to DC. It was a loooong car ride, not because it was it's actually too long of a drive, but because Atticus was so excited to see his buddy Hagan and play that he wouldn't stop asking "how much longer?".....
We stopped for lunch at Cracker Barrel on the way - that's a good spot for us because there is something on the menu for everyone and Atticus can plays in their kids section for a bit before we confine him to the car seat for a few more hours. I have to say, he is a wonderful travel buddy...despite his concept of time and distance, he usually just settles in with his stuffed animals and a movie and he's good to go!
Aaron dropped us off and kept on towards DC. Amy and I have known each other since we were 17 years old when her brother was my youth pastor in Tampa. She would come visit him and hang out with all the kids in the youth group....Then we ended up going to Lee together and then lived together for several years. We were in DZT and Campus Choir with each other...so LOTS of memories were made with this chick!
Amy has three amazing kiddos, Leighton is 11, Olivia is 9 and Hagan is 5. Atticus thought the girls were pretty cool, but he stuck rather close to Hagan most of the time..Hagan introduced Atticus to XBOX for the first time so after that the girls didn't have a chance! The first night we were there Hagan really wanted Atticus to sleep in his bunk bed with him...we tried.
These two boys were so wound up and so excited to see each other that they would not go to sleep! They talked and laughed, sang songs and giggled and sleep was clearly not on the agenda. So I made the executive decision for Atticus to come sleep with me - less than 2 minutes in the bed and he was out like a light! Poor thing was so tired from all the excitement but we said we'd give it a try the next night.
VBS was going on at their church this week so we were able to tag along. I was thrilled!! Even though Atticus was a year and a half younger than Hagan, he was able to go with him in his class. He loved it! It started with worship in the main sanctuary with all the participants and then they rotated through various stations. The theme was "stand strong"...you can see Atticus belwo in the navy and white striped shirt showing his strong muscles during the songs!
Atticus looked so little compared to the five year olds getting ready for kindergarten, but he also looked so big to me, sitting at the table, listening to the lesson, following directions, not needing my help. This was a great preview of what pre-k is going to be like this fall for him :)
There were five kids in his group - whenever they would travel from one station to the next, they would all hold onto this rope with ribbons looped on it as handles so no one got left behind... As soon as he saw all the kids with their yellow VBS shirts on he of course wanted one...
I caved and got him a shirt....he thought he was tough stuff in his "stand strong" shirt! A fun memento from our time at Kingdom Rock VBS!
After a full day of crafts, bible adventures, games, songs, dances, movies and friends, we headed home, had lunch, and took a nap! He was exhausted from the solid four hours of go-go-go without any down time!! He slept like a log!
We tried sleeping in Hagan's bunk bed again...this time they watched a movie together on the iPad before bed and were able to settle... I love this picture of them. Atticus was resting his head on Hagan's chest, so sweet. When the movie was over they went to sleep just fine and Atticus slept all night with his buddy!
We had an awesome few days. It was a quick trip but filled with so many laughs. Already looking forward to next time.
